Alchemy Guide

Alchemy lets you turn ingredients into useful mixtures and potions. Unlike shop-bought consumables, Alchemy rewards characters who invest in the skill: higher Alchemy mastery directly improves the chance that a mixture stabilizes successfully.

Quick facts: Alchemy is a character skill with mastery from 1 to 100. Each recipe has its own hidden difficulty value, and every successful brew can give an item, Alchemy skill progress, character EXP, and Alchemy achievement progress.

How Alchemy Works

  1. Learn Alchemy so your character has Alchemy mastery above 0.
  2. Visit an NPC or interaction that offers an Alchemy recipe.
  3. Prepare the ingredients required by that recipe.
  4. Choose the mixture you want to brew.
  5. The server compares your Alchemy Mastery against that recipe's Difficulty.
  6. If the roll succeeds, the resulting item is created and you receive the successful-brew rewards.

The important part is simple: the higher your Alchemy mastery is compared with the recipe difficulty, the more reliable that recipe becomes.

Alchemy Success Formula

Success Chance = Alchemy Mastery − Recipe Difficulty

The final result is clamped between 1% and 100%. The server then rolls from 1 to 100.

  • If the calculation falls below 1, you still have a minimum 1% chance.
  • If the calculation reaches 100 or higher, the brew succeeds at 100%.
  • Recipe difficulty is defined by the Alchemy NPC script, so harder mixtures remain less reliable until your mastery improves.

Success Rate Examples

The table below shows how the formula behaves at several example recipe difficulties. These difficulty values are examples of the formula, not a published recipe list.

Alchemy MasteryDifficulty 10Difficulty 20Difficulty 30Difficulty 40Difficulty 50
2010%1%1%1%1%
4030%20%10%1%1%
6050%40%30%20%10%
8070%60%50%40%30%
10090%80%70%60%50%
Example: With 75 Alchemy against a recipe with 30 Difficulty: 75 − 30 = 45% success chance.

Why 100 Alchemy Does Not Mean Every Recipe Is 100%

Alchemy mastery is not used as the final percentage by itself. Recipe difficulty is always subtracted first.

For example, at 100 Alchemy:

Recipe DifficultySuccess Chance at 100 AlchemyAverage attempts per success
1090%1.11
2080%1.25
3070%1.43
4060%1.67
5050%2.00
6040%2.50
7030%3.33
8020%5.00
9010%10.00
99+1%100.00

The average-attempt values above are statistical averages over many brews, not guarantees.

Average Attempts per Success = 100 ÷ Success Chance

What Happens When a Brew Succeeds?

When the Alchemy roll succeeds, the server performs several rewards in sequence:

  • The recipe's resulting item is generated.
  • The item is added to your inventory if you have enough space and carrying capacity.
  • You gain Alchemy skill progress.
  • You gain a small amount of character EXP based on the recipe difficulty.
  • Your Alchemy achievement activity increases by 1.
  • Your character is saved after the successful brew.
Important: Alchemy skill progress, character EXP, and Alchemy achievement progress are awarded only after a successful item creation.

What Happens When a Brew Fails?

If the success roll fails, no resulting item is created and the Alchemy success rewards are not awarded.

The core Alchemy function reports the failed mixture back to the NPC script. Ingredient handling belongs to that recipe's NPC script, so whether a failed recipe consumes, returns, or otherwise handles its ingredients can depend on how that particular recipe is written.

Why this matters: The server's global Alchemy formula determines whether the mixture succeeds. The NPC recipe controls the ingredients and recipe flow around that roll.

Inventory & Weight Rules

A successful roll still needs room for the resulting item. Before creating the item, the server checks whether your character can actually receive it.

  • You need enough inventory capacity for the result.
  • You also need enough carrying capacity for the result.
  • If the result cannot be added, the Alchemy operation does not complete as a successful brew.
  • The result is not intentionally thrown onto the ground as a fallback by the Alchemy function.
Tip: Keep at least one usable inventory slot and some spare carrying weight before brewing valuable mixtures.

Character EXP Formula

A successful brew awards a small amount of character EXP based on that recipe's difficulty.

Alchemy EXP Roll = 1d max(1, floor(Recipe Difficulty ÷ 3))

That roll is then passed through the server's normal EXP system. The current EXP system applies its normal global scaling and can also be affected by applicable EXP systems such as events, VIP, map modifiers, and Equal Share party EXP.

Ignoring those additional modifiers, the current server's normal EXP pipeline multiplies the rolled value by 10. This gives the following base range:

Recipe DifficultyAlchemy EXP rollBase EXP after ×10 scalingAverage base EXP
1–511010
151–510–5030
301–1010–10055
451–1510–15080
601–2010–200105
901–3010–300155

Higher-difficulty recipes therefore offer more potential character EXP when they succeed, but they are also naturally harder to stabilize because the same difficulty value reduces your success chance.

Alchemy Skill Progression

Every successful brew calls the normal skill progression system with a base Alchemy skill-progress value of 1.

The current server has a global 200% Skill EXP rate, so that base value is scaled to 2 skill-progress points before any applicable VIP Skill EXP bonus is processed.

  • Failed mixtures do not award Alchemy skill progress.
  • Successful mixtures do award Alchemy skill progress.
  • Alchemy mastery can grow up to 100.
  • Reaching 100 in the skill also qualifies for the general Master Skill achievement activity.
Progress loop: Brew successfully → gain Alchemy skill progress → raise mastery → improve future success chance.

Difficulty: Risk vs Reward

Recipe difficulty affects Alchemy in two opposite ways:

Higher Difficulty...Effect
Reduces success chanceEvery +1 Difficulty removes 1 percentage point from the success calculation.
Raises possible EXP rewardThe successful-brew EXP die grows with floor(Difficulty / 3).

This means a difficult recipe can give slightly better character EXP, but the main reason to choose a recipe should still be the item you need and whether your mastery makes the attempt practical.

Useful Alchemy Calculations

Expected Successful Brews

Expected Successes = Number of Attempts × (Success Chance ÷ 100)

Example: 50 attempts at a 60% success rate gives an expected average of:

50 × 0.60 = approximately 30 successful brews

Chance of At Least One Success

At Least One Success = 1 − (1 − Success Rate)Attempts

For example, a recipe with a 20% success chance brewed 5 times has about a 67.23% chance of succeeding at least once.

Alchemy Achievements

Each successful Alchemy item creation adds 1 to the character-scoped Alchemy achievement activity.

Achievement rule: Failed mixtures do not count. A successful brew counts only after the resulting item has actually been created and awarded.
